power station, with full steam 24 hours a day, with restaurants, shops, conservatories on five floors - a piece of city. This is the type of project that can be transformed, even multiplied.

Nussbaumer: The Tower is our life's goal. I'll continue to say this until the tower stands one day. And we are going to build it, that much we know!

Humm: Burckhardt + Partner Basel is well known among Swiss architectural firms. In contrast, not very much was known about the Zurich office up to your first successful competitions six years ago. What was the initial situation at the time of the takeover?

Nussbaumer: The offer to take over management of the Zurich office seemed like an adventure and thus exciting because one certainly could not speak of a successful office at the time. The office had only a single order and a corresponding reputation. After looking at this order we rejected it. That was a risky decision which, however, proved to be correct in the end. Of course, it was also necessary to make staff changes. These decisions were not easy and they were not taken carelessly, but they were necessary and correct. If we take on a project, then it is with one hundred percent conviction and the corresponding commitment. Thus Heinz Moser, whom I recruited for a cooperative effort in 1998, and I completely revamped the Zurich office, pursuing our architectural and business goals with all of our combined strength.
